Overview

I’m a big fan of hosting my own media, and I was a Plex user for years. As Plex started moving in a direction that I wasn't a fan of, I began looking for an alternative and eventually landed on the free and open-source Jellyfin platform. I liked Jellyfin, but found the Roku client experience lacking, so I decided to build my own.

I had considered building this app before I started working with AI, but the effort involved was well beyond the time I was willing to put into it. After bringing AI into my development workflow, I revisited the idea and found that AI gave me enough leverage to make a project like this both practical and achievable.

After creating my first Roku app with ABSTV, this project gave me a chance to dig further into how Roku applications work, both in form and function. Designing the interface and figuring out the user flows within the platform's constraints presented some interesting challenges that I enjoyed taking on.
